Education Charities Make Learning Possible for Students.

The Michelle A. Thomas Teaching Foundation was founded by Michelle Thomas native of Grenada, who grew up in a rural, agricultural community. From an early age, I recognized that education was the key to a better life, not only for myself but for my family as well. I made a conscious decision at just 10 years old to use education as the gateway to future success.

Having triumphed in primary and secondary school in my homeland, I embarked on a lifelong educational journey. At 18, I left my island to pursue higher education, starting at the junior college level before transitioning to a four-year university- Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls Texas, to earn a degree in education. I taught for 18 years in Title 1 schools across four districts,

two in rural communities and two in suburban areas. Throughout my career, I have taught first through third grade, worked with second language learners, supported gifted students, served as a reading interventionist, and now work as a reading specialist with a focus on dyslexia.

In my role, I’ve seen firsthand the impact I’ve made on both students and teachers. I’ve dedicated my career to serving low-income, underserved communities and have witnessed the transformation education can bring, especially for students from low socioeconomic backgrounds. However, I’ve also recognized that the full-scale impact I desire can be even more significant if I give back to the communities that shaped me.

Over the years, I’ve initiated various projects, such as running a summer school program in Grenada as a college student and distributing hundreds of soccer boots to schools in my home country. These efforts, along with others, have provided much-needed resources to schools and students back home. Many people in my homeland have encouraged me to formalize my efforts due to the positive influence I’ve had in rural areas.

In addition to these initiatives, I’ve served as a Girl Scouts group leader, coached children, and competed in the first-ever UIL, producing a district-wide first-place winner. I’ve also coordinated a Spelling Bee for five years, producing a winner in our area learning community.

With these experiences in mind, I have decided to formalize my efforts through this foundation. The mission is clear: to give back to underserved communities, especially in rural areas, by providing mentorship, educational resources, and opportunities. My vision is to empower individuals through education and to see at least three people from my homeland receive their first degree, whether in an academic field or professional discipline.

To empower underserved students and their families by providing mentorship, resources, and community support, thus enabling them to achieve personal growth, academic success and long-
